The bias and stereotypes of Latinos is ubiquitous throughout American popular culture, and it has effected how people perceive them to be. Within the different avenues of American popular culture, Latino stereotypes are commonly seen in films and television. The stereotypes have not only affected how people view them, but it has also created different types of Latinos that are deemed to exist. The different stereotypes of Latinos in film and television range from the overly sexual character, drug trafficker, to the illegal immigrant. These are examples of the negative stereotypes that compose the image of Latinos in society. Unfortunately, the negative stereotypes are what Americans believe to be true about all Latinos. The negative stereotype of Latinos is the belief of what most of America has characterized Latinos to be, because of the negative depictions shown throughout the many channels of popular culture. The stereotypical paradigms have even affected family social interactions within many Latino households. They have also affected how Latinos handle the negative stereotypes. A study conducted by Rivadeneyra in the Journal of Adolescent Research asked Latino youth to watch clips from television shows, and to report if they felt the roles of Latinos were accurate or stereotypical. The study found that, if one does not fit this description, then the only alternative that many young Latinos see is to accept the stereotypes perpetuated by white Americans (Rivas Saenz, 5). The frequent exposure of the negative stereotype portrayals affects Latino youth in such a way that can lower their sense of racial self-esteem. It also affects their sense of individuality within their culture, because p opular culture groups all Latinos into one group. Moreover, popular culture doesnt take into consideration how many different cultures exist thought the Latino community. People neglect to remember how many different cultural groups are out there, from Puerto Ricans to Colombians. Non-Hispanics tend to assign one culture to any Latino they see, like saying they are Mexican, even though the non-Hispanics know they are not the only cultural group belonging to the Latino community. When Latinos constantly experience this stereotype, they eventually give up on correcting those who do this to them. This forces them to revert to accepting what people see them as and not who they are. Time after time, movies have negatively characterized Latinos. Hollywood movies are a big part of popular culture. Fictional characters are mainly presented as uneducated, living lives filled with violence, and this portrays the belief that this is the only way to achieve the Latin American Dream. The Latin American Dream refers to the idea of Latinos reaching a higher socioeconomic status through alternative pathways (Rivas Saenz, 6). A prime example of this cultural appropriation would be the movie Scarface, in which it depicts the roles of Cuban-Americans who are drug dealers. Movies such as this, show the viewers that for the Latino community to gain success they must bypass laws or human morals to do so. As stated before, the negative portrayals in media causes the Latino youth to see themselves in that negative light. Furthermore, they dont perceive themselves as having worth and value, instead as constituents of a subordinate group within American society (Rivas Saenz , 7). They begin to believe the negative depictions to be true. The constant subjectivity of these negative views seems to be a justification for the youth to separate themselves from their culture. Not only is the misrepresentation seen in movies, but it is also seen in television shows. It has been one of the front-runners in the subordination of Latinos. The popularity of television plays a major role in the depictions of Latinos. Television show creators have forced negative traits on Latino characters. Those of which include, being uneducated, unmotivated, poverty-stricken, lazy, criminals, and as people who appear only to work jobs such as maids, janitors, or gardeners (Rivas Saenz, 8). Among many other minorities, Latinos have stereotypes that have maintained their position throughout television. An example of a television show that showcases Latino stereotypes would be The George Lopez Show, where there is a distinct portrayal that upholds the standards of the Latino bias. The overpowering atmosphere of American popular culture has played a major role in the way Latino Americans are portrayed than they have been before. In the article, Latino Portrayals in the Media, it discusses the representation of Latinos seen in primetime media. Even though there has been greater representation of Latinos in the media, there is still a negative effect on the Latino community. For a long time, Latinos have not only been portrayed negatively through stereotypes but hey have also been largely ignored and excluded from most American Media (Latino Portrayals in the Media). A study conducted by the Annenberg School of Cultural Communicators Project, found that between 1969 to 1978 only 2.5% of mainstream television characters were Latinos. This percentage is not far off from what it reflects today and compared to other minorities, they are still notably behind. Another study by The Center for Media and Public Affairs in Washington D.C. has shown that Latinos have b een in the 2% range for the past thirty years (Latino Portrayals in the Media). When Latinos are in the different forms of media, a certain type of Latino is represented. For example, someone with darker features, tanner skin, and an accent. This overlooks the diversity in the Latino community that is included under the umbrella term Hispanic. There is a lack of range represented of the community in the media. A major issue that has been created by stereotypes is the lack of diversity. Popular culture has presented one cohesive community that ultimately suppresses the different cultures within the actual Latino community. Even though Latinos are considered a minority community, in reality not all Latinos are fond of each other or share similar values. Due to this, its difficult for this community to unite to fight the created labels and false cultural propaganda that work against them (Latino Portrayals in the Media). Although this has been a road block for many Latinos, others have seen this as a way to affirm their own history and position in the U.S. This is very important to them, because they want to make it clear that not all Latinos are immigrants. Many are second, third generation and beyond other Americans who are wholly assimilated and have rights and rightly insist on asserting their rights (Latino Portra yals in the Media). In other words, they believe it is unfair to immediately group them in to the immigrant stereotype, and that they also have rights as much as any other American does. Another rising issue created by stereotyping has affected Latinos sexuality by being labeled as being seductive or having many children because of being impoverished. This is just one of many stereotypes popular culture has created. The stereotypes have remained defining and demeaning characteristics for more than a century and still exist today. The author Charles Ram? ­rez Berg of Latino Images In Film finds that Latino images in the media contains six basic stereotypes: el bandido, the harlot, the male buffoon, the female clown, the Latin lover, and the dark lady. El bandido is stereotypically the Mexican bandit in numerous Westerns and adventure films. An example of this would be at the beginning of Raiders of the Lost Ark, where the bandidos are the two guides that betrayed Indiana Jones. These characters are displayed as dirty and under kept, irrational and quick to resort to violence. Theyre inability to speak English or speaking English with a heavy accent is filmmakings way of showing their feeble intellect (Berg, 68). Hollywood characterizes them as having little brain power. In todays Hollywood films, el bandido is seen in two variants: the Latin American gangster or drug runner and the inner -city gang member. The female version to el bandido is the harlot, who is primarily characterized as lusty, hot-tempered, and doesnt know what to do without a man. For example, the character of Angelica in Six Days, Seven Nights, as soon as the pilot (Harrison Ford) leaves she is lost without him. Her character is a prime example of a stereotype blend between the harlot and the female buffoon. To continue, one of the other stereotypes is the male buffoon. These characters can be found in television shows like Pancho in The Cisco Kid, Sergeant Garcia in Walt Disneys Zorro series, and Ricky Ricardo in I Love Lucy. This stereotype is said to be simpleminded, unable to master English. What is funny about this character, what audiences are given to laugh at, are the very characteristics that separate him from Hollywoods vision of the WASP American mainstream (Berg, 72). This is Hollywoods attempt of making an old stereotype relevant again by turning the character into a comic. The female clown is the equivalent of the Latino male buffoon and exemplifies a common devices that the Hollywood narrative employs to neutralize the screen Latinas sexuality (Berg, 73). Charles Ram? ­rez Berg argues that this is a necessary role because the hero must have a reason to reject the Latina for the Anglo woman, to which maintains the WASP status quo. Films show how Hollywood narrative s often imply that Anglos should only be with those of their ethnicity. Another stereotype found in films and television is the Latin lover. This character is deemed to have the qualities of a sexuality that makes them capable of making a sensuous but dangerous brand of love (Berg, 76). The Latin lover has continuously been seen played by a number of Latin actors like Antonio Banderas in films like Never Talk to Strangers. Like how Latina women have been subjected to the sexpot stereotype Latino men have often been sexualized in the media as the Latin lover. The last stereotype the author mentioned was the dark lady. This stereotype is said to be the female Latin lover, where she is virginal, inscrutable, and aristocratic. According the author, there is a way to check for stereotypes called the stereotype communication test. This is practiced by substituting the role being analyzed with another ethnicity, and if the role can be played well enough then theres most likely no stereotyping occurring. On the other hand, if no other ethnicity can play the role just as well then it probably involves stereotypical traits of the cultural group. There have been films made that went against stereotypes, whose characters are portrayed appropriately even though filmmaking relies on stereotypes. Furthermore, there has been a growing number of Latino filmmaker who continue to break through the stereotyping paradigm of filmmaking. Alongside film and television reflecting a negative portrayal of Latinos, the medias pervasive stereotypes of Latinos also prevail. In the manuscript The Negative Effects of Mass Media Stereotypes of Latinos and Immigrants, the authors Tyler Reny and Sylvia Manzano express how public opinion reflects the medias stereotypes of Latinos and immigrants. They believe that these stereotypes make it hard to believe that America is supposed to be an inclusive, multiracial democracy or so called the melting pot. We find convincing evidence that non-Latinos attribute both negative and positive stereotypes to Latinos and immigrants, and that news and entertainment media can shape public opinion about Latinos and immigrants in a variety of ways (Reny Manzano, 195). It is very common to see media coverage of Latino immigrants that is in a negative light, full of stereotypes, and highly dramatized. Withering public support, loud opposition, and negative stereotypes firmly contribute to popul ar discourse. Coverage of Latinos and immigrants focuses almost mainly on the negative events like undocumented immigrants and lacks important content. The authors believe that since Americans are usually not fully knowledgeable about issues concerning Latinos or immigrants, they formulate their opinions based on what popular culture presents them with. Given that Americans are poorly informed about issues of immigration, media can play a large role in constructing the metaphors by which Americans come to understand demographic change, immigration, and Latinos (Reny Manzano, 197). The study conducted by the authors involved asking respondents to think about films and television show and to recall the roles they often seen played by Latinos. The top three answers were criminal or gang member, gardener, and maid. The more familiar the respondents were with Latinos, the less likely they were to believe the stereotypes in the media. Looking first at media and positive stereotypes, respondents wh o were exposed to positive primes were more likely to agree that positive stereotypes applied to Latinos than those who were exposed to negative primes (Reny Manzano, 206). News channels has one of the strongest effects in shaping attitudes about Latinos and immigrants. For instance, people who watch and trust more conservative media are more likely to agree with negative stereotypes than those who watch and trust liberal media. People will usually cater to outlets that uphold their beliefs to look for information that supports them. Thus, this is why the media has such a strong hold on priming the way people perceive others in society. The negative depictions shown throughout the different outlets of popular culture has led America to believe these stereotypes of Latinos. Popular culture grasps stereotypes by the neck and forces society to believe them to be true. Latinos are just one of the many minorities that have been affected by stereotypes. Latinos are not the only victims of stereotyping; these groups are not to be forgotten: LGBTQ, Native Americans, African Americans, Asians and Asian Americans, the working class, the poor, immigrants, women, and so on. Human thinking is heavily reliant on the images popular culture presents. These images and metaphors are the mental building blocks with which humans make sense of their social world.

Jonathan Pollard Biography Free Online Research Papers Almost 20 years ago Jonathan Jay Pollard was arrested. Almost everybody here has heard of Jonathan Pollard, maybe you know he was convicted of a crime and has been sitting in jail for the last 20 years. Who is Jonathan Pollard? Born 1954 in Texas. Parents instilled a love of Israel. He became a Naval Intelligence Specialist in 1979 and got clearance to classified data in 1981. Pollard, a Jew, always had a love for the Land of Israel. He got upset when he realized that there was a lot of info that America had regarding specific threats to Israel that they were not forwarding to the Israelis. Later Pollard remarked that Soviet military equipment was â€Å"quietly entering the Middle East unnoticed by the Israelis who were depending upon the U.S. intelligence community for warning of such activity.† Also in 1981 Jay met Anne Henderson. In 1984 he was transferred to Anti-Terrorist Alert Center of the Naval Intelligence. Here was an assignment he heartily welcomed; to deal with potential terrorist threats. In 1983 President Ronald Reagan signed a bilateral intelligence-sharing agreement with Israel. The gist of the agreement was that America would share with Israel and vice-versa to exchange intelligence information pertaining to the security of each nation. Pollard was convinced that NIS officials were ignoring its directives. He claimed that he saw a photograph of a poison gas factory being constructed in Iraq and requested permission to transmit it to Israel. Jay said his superior laughed and said Jews were too sensitive about gas because of their experiences in World War II. All this led to Pollard’s decision to share info with Israel. He turned over thousands of documents that dealt with Israel and gave them over to Israeli Air Force Colonel Aviem Sella. He was put in contact with the colonel through a mutual friend. Before Sella agreed to talk with Pollard he got it cleared with the official Israelis through Yosef Yagur who worked at the Israeli consulate in New York for an intelligence gathering agency called LAKAM. Pollard gave over classified documents for about one year w/o incident. From 1984 until he was caught in the spring of 1985 by U.S. officials. He was caught when one of his superiors, James Agee was looking for info to force Pollard to quit. Pollard had become a slacker at work and seemed not to care about his job and they wanted to force him to quit or be fired. Through this scrutiny Agee realized that Pollard was constantly taking home documents. This led him to suspect him and ultimately realize Pollard was a full-fledged spy. Early on November 9, 1985, a Saturday morning, Agee was examining everything he could find in Pollard’s desk and work area. He had been doing it for several hours when the realization hit him like a bolt of lightning: â€Å"I’ve got a spy here!† When Jonathan realized they were on to him he got in touch with Sella. Now very nervous himself, Sella got in touch with Yagur. The latter gave him bad news. LAKAM had not made any escape plans for those involved in this operation. Sella was baffled. Yagur told him to just get himself out of the U.S. as soon as possible In the meantime Yagur and others were having a conference concerning the fate of the Pollards. â€Å"We’ve got to save them,† Yagur said. His superiors didn’t think so. He told Yagur and the others that they should get their own hides out of the United States as soon as possible. The upshot of their meeting was that Jonathan Jay Pollard would be left as the fall guy. Jay and Anne, of course, were not aware of this decision. Jay was convinced that the Israelis would rescue him. As soon as he could he jumped into his five-year-old green Mustang. The couple was driving to the Israeli embassy in Washington, D. C., believing that they would be given refuge there. When they got within sight of the light beige brick building, they saw its flag, made up of a crisp blue Star of David on a background of purest white, flying proud and high. That flag seemed to beckon them to safety and freedom. The gate of the embassy opened up for the car in front of the Mustang and Pollard zoomed in right behind it. They had made it! But no! The Israeli consulate security guards conferred with their superiors and came relayed the distressing news. The Pollards were not welcome. The Israeli’s would not take responsibility for the spy ring! Finally the anguished Pollard turned the car around and drove it out of the embassy but that was as far as the the couple got. Cars and vans carrying FBI agents surrounded the embassy. As soon as Jay got out of his car, he was arrested on charges of spying, handcuffed, and told his Miranda rights. As we all know Israel is on very-friendly terms with the U.S. That in itself lessens the severity of the crime. Also Pollard claims and it was never proven otherwise, he never gave over any of the American agents’ names. Now we go to the trial. Jonathan Pollard can’t be charged with treason because treason is a legal term reserved for spying for an enemy state usually during wartime. Jonathan Pollard was indicted on only one charge: one count of passing classified information to an ally, without intent to harm the United States. Pollard’s attorneys cut a deal with the prosecution. Their client would plead guilty if the prosecutors would not ask for the maximum sentence life in prison. The deal was accepted. Pollard pled guilty. Jay Pollard sat in the courtroom, visibly trembling, as he made the plea. The judge tried to impress the gravity of the situation upon the spy and make certain he knew that the deal carried no guarantee. â€Å"You realize I could still impose life imprisonment?† Robinson continued. â€Å"Yes,† Jay said. The sentencing took place nine months later. It was March 4, 1987. The day before sentencing then- Secretary of Defense Caspar Weinberger delivered a 46-page classified memorandum to the sentencing judge. We’ll get back to the document in a minute. At the summation prior to sentencing, the prosecutor, despite the plea agreement made it clear that a heinous crime had been committed. He went so far as to compare it to Soviet spies that had been convicted that year. The judge then passed the sentence; With respect to the defendant Jonathan Jay Pollard, who is being sentenced for violation of Title XVIII United States Code, Section 794c, I commit the defendant to the custody of the Attorney General or his authorized representative for his life.† People gasped at the harsh sentence. Anne Henderson-Pollard let out screams of grief. â€Å"No! No! No!† she cried even as she collapsed in a heap on the floor. Two female bailiffs helped the distraught woman to her feet. She was sobbing as she stood on rubbery legs. Many, perhaps most, observers were shocked that Jonathan Jay Pollard received a life sentence. After all, the government had not even asked for one. Following the plea agreement, they only requested a â€Å"substantial† term. At no point was Pollard formally charged with treason. No one else convicted of spying for an ally has gotten more than 14 years in prison. Several reasons have been suggested for Judge Aubrey Robinson’s unexpectedly severe judgment. The most consistent complaint is in regards to the writings of Caspar Weinberger just prior to sentencing. Weinberger was secretary of defense at the time of the Pollard sentencing. He wrote a 46-page memorandum about the harm caused by the defendant. He also wrote a letter delivered by courier to the judge just the day before sentencing. The memorandum was later released to the public with many sections blacked out for reasons of national security. The letter has never been made public. Exactly why the memorandum was submitted is in dispute. Observers first assumed that it was written and given to the judge at the request of the prosecutor, Joseph DiGenova. Later, DiGenova claimed it had been written at the invitation of the judge himself. Weinberger’s memorandum wrote of Pollard’s actions in the most damning terms. Among many other things, it said, â€Å"It is difficult for me . . . to conceive of a greater harm to national security than that caused by the defendant in view of the breadth, the critical importance to the United States and the high sensitivity of the information he sold to Israel . . . I respectfully submit that any U.S. citizen, and in particular a trusted government official, who sells U.S. secrets to any foreign nation should not be punished merely as a common criminal. Rather the punishment imposed should reflect the perfidy of the individual actions, the magnitude of the treason committed, and the needs of national security.† The word â€Å"any† is underlined in the original, reflecting Weinberger’s belief that Pollard should not be given leniency because he spied for a friend. However, there is an important point overlooked by Weinberger, Hersh, and the many others who call Pollard a â€Å"traitor.† In the United States constitution, treason is defined as â€Å"levying war against them (the United States), or in adhering to their Enemies, giving them Aid and Comfort.† Pollard never acted on behalf of an enemy of the United States. The Jonathan Jay Pollard case remains a political hot potato. The question of anti-Semitism hovers over it. Is Pollard being treated more severely than another spy would because he is Jewish? Some well-informed observers believe so. .† Time for Jonathan Jay Pollard has been among the hardest possible. He is in prison as someone commonly called a â€Å"traitor.† He is a Jew in a prison system in which there are few Jews and many anti-Semites. In an interview with Wolf Blitzer that took place while Pollard was awaiting trial and still in jail, Jay told the writer that he lived in constant fear since both the Aryan Brotherhood and Black Muslims – two groups usually at each others’ throats – have vowed to kill him. Supporters of Jay Pollard believed he stood a good chance of securing his freedom when a lame-duck President Bill Clinton began looking into last minute pardons. Their hopes were dashed for, although Clinton pardoned more than 140 people during his last days as president, Pollard was not among them. The pardoned included Whitewater figure Susan McDougal, Clinton’s half-brother Roger Clinton, and, most famously, financier Marc Rich who had fled the country to avoid facing an array of charges including many counts of tax evasion and racketeering. Many years have gone by since Jay Pollard was a free man. He is now housed at the federal penitentiary in Butner, North Carolina. His receding hairline has become a bald dome. The remaining black hairs have so mixed with white as to make his hair look a dull, dusty brown. Modern sport is also influenced by the liberal idea of a free market where actors can perform, compete and be rewarded according to performance. However, one may ask why and how athletes are willing to risk their health and even their life on the free market of sport when they do the extreme: push limits, break records, set new standards, develop new events. This paper discusses what may be the result as sport moves toward the limits of human performance. The ethical focus on the development of the elite sport should not be restricted to the individual athlete, but should also include the various systems that make up elite spor t. Other actors, like coaches, leaders, sponsors, medical personnel, service people, etc., are taking part in the same development. One problem in the modern context is that society is divided into different moral sectors. What is accepted in entertainment or art may not be accepted in sport. It is suggested that we should develop a common ethic for all performance-centered activities like music, painting, science and research, acrobatics and stunts, acting, top politics and business. As we learn more in Jorge Luis Borges story ‘The Gospel according to Mark’ we find a unique message that there exists some greater power in the universe that punishes those that do preach what they do not believe. Borges uses irony in a setting to realize the importance of knowing what you teach and the potential, yet extreme dangers of not doing so.In 1914 his family moved to Switzerland, where he studied at the College de Geneve. The family travelled widely in Europe, including stays in Spain. On his return to Argentina in 1921, Borges began publishing his poems and essays in surrealist literary journals. His work was translated and published widely in the United States and in Europe. Borges himself was fluent in several languages. Borges dedicated his final work, Los Conjurados ( The Conspirators), to the city of Geneva, Switzerland, and it was there, in 1986, that he chose to die (para 2).Early in the story we get an idea for the character of Espinosa. Borges says â€Å"We may describe him for now as no different to any of the many young men of Buenos Aires, with no particular traits worthy of note other than an almost unlimited kindness and an oratorical faculty that had earned him several prizes from the English school in Ramos Mejia† (186). Espinosa is introduced as a skilled speaker, non-confrontational, who is thirty-three years old. Borges describes him as having â€Å"no traits worthier of note than the gift for public speaking†¦ e didn't like to argue† (186). Jesus was renowned for his powerful sermons, peaceful nature, and most of the information available about him starts when he is in his thirties. However, the similarities in personality end there, because unlike Jesus, Espinosa is a freethinker, at least in name, who prefers city living. As we get deeper into the story ’A gospel according to mark’ Borges continually relates stories and similarity’s in the events that leave a clear indication of Jesus and the Bible.Borges tells the readers ,Espinosa is â€Å"thirty-three† with â€Å"an almost unlimited kindness and a capacity for public speaking,† (187) making him comparable to Christ at the age of His Crucifixion, who had gained followers with his kindness and charisma. Also, Espinosa, who is stranded indoors with the Gutres family after a large flood that is reminiscent of the Biblical account of Noah’s Ark. Espinosa is once more comparable to Christ when he cures a pet goat with â€Å"pills,† an act which resembles magic to the rural family.By creating this resemblance to Jesus, Borges manages to keep us thinking how good Espinosa is being towards the Gutres and therefore doesn’t give us an opportunity to think of the events that later take place . This is all a part of creating the Irony of the story. Borges uses irony to create and intriguing story. As we are becoming more familiar with the story and the character of Espinosa we believe things are moving smoothly between him and the Gutres family. This shows when Borges characterizes the Gutres as Christ’s followers and writes, â€Å"as if lost without [Espinosa,] liked following him from room to room†¦Ã¢â‚¬  (186).From this we can see how they have become almost reliant on Espinosa and how much of an impact he has had on them. This is where we start to learn the key irony of the story. Espinosa is not religious and only prays before bed because of a promise he had made to his mother. This is ironic in itself as it makes the Christ figure of the story not religious, causing the reader to believe it strange later when Espinosa begins to read to the Gutres from the Bible. Borges sets the scene later for the even greater irony than to be expected.As readers we e xpect Espinosa to die of a metaphorical crucifixion, we are taken back to how precise the death of Christ is. The Gutres take the story seriously and don’t see it as the story it is but as if it is orders from their Christ figure. When they later on crucify their Christ, this reveals the greater irony of the story which is the man who calls himself a â€Å"free thinker† (187) and is almost ignorant towards religion is actually seen as the Christ figure essentially leading himself and instructing his own death by the Gutres.The lesson that is opened to Espinosa’s eyes at the end of the story as he realizes what is happening is also one taught to the reader. Both Espinosa and the reader realize, through the ironic situations of the story, the importance of knowing what you teach and the potential, yet extreme, dangers of not doing so.
